== THIS WEEK ==

The LONDON FRIDAY NIGHT SKATE route this week says "Happy Birthday" to
one of our marshals. 12.7 mile Birthday cruise takes us from
Knightsbridge to Chelsea and Fulham and back again, writing a name
across southwest London. Half time is at West Brompton.

Please skate on the left and don't cut corners, otherwise the
letters will come out all blurred.

On SUNDAY we're off on an adventure, taking our skates to over 25
countries (well, their embassies anyway). This 8-mile, slow-paced
Round The World trip is FREE, with no airport delays. Half time at
Antigua & Barbuda (nearest tube Bond Street).

== LAST WEEK ==

Photos are now up on the web site from last weeks' SUNDAY STROLL route
to Russell Square. If there are this many skaters turning up in
January, what's it going to be like come the summer?

== EASTERFEST ==

Still in fluid planning stages (hydration is important, as we keep
saying) but the EASTER BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND is shaping up to mark the
kick-off of the summer season in a big way. Events being planned
include

- the Long Good Friday Night Skate
- Saturday afternoon workshops
- Oh my ears and whiskers! Bunny Stroll
- Easter Monday: Treasure Hunt in Hyde Park

Programme may change. We'll continue to announce news in Week on
Wheels just as soon as we know it ourselves (and sometimes even
earlier).

== ROLL CAMERAS ==

Fancy the lure of the silver screen? A TV director writes: "We are
shooting a scene where we have to create a large group of skaters and
cyclists going across Lambeth Bridge in central London. The piece is
set in 2012 and the skaters are part of a protesting group. We will
need between 100 to 200 roller skaters and bladers to achieve the
desired effect, and obviously we will be paying either a company/group
or the individuals for helping us with this."

It's expected to be shot one evening on or about 14th March (TBC) but
if you're interested in taking part please let us know (feedback form)
so that we can get back to them with some idea of numbers. We're
hoping to have the new Firebrox there too.

== RECYCLING THE CIRCLE : 2nd MARCH ==

If you missed the Circle Line Skate last December, well, so did we: it
was rained off. A quick reminder that it's been rescheduled for 2ND
MARCH. Please pass down the platform and use all available skates.

== LESS OFFS WITH LESSONS ==

Learning to skate requires two things: lots of practice and knowing
what the heck it is you're meant to be practising. There are a lot of
really good self-taught skaters out there (if this is you, you can
skip to the end now) but for the rest of us, lessons short cut the
learning process and avoid developing bad habits that are hard to
kick.

Beginner lessons teach you how to skate safely and lay down the skills
that will allow you to specialise in the future, whether you
ultimately want to street skate, speed skate, play hockey or head down
the beach with the slalomers. You can opt for group lessons, which are
cheaper and have the advantage of introducing you to other people at a
similar level, or private lessons, which are more expensive (the exact
price depends on the instructor) but offer more personalised
tuition. There are several schools in London, as well as individual
instructors, but the best policy is to choose an instructor who is ICP
certified and with whom you get on well. The price compares favourably
to a gym membership and will repay itself hundredfold as you get more
out of skating.

A word of warning though: practice is still essential. Try to practise
for two hours on your own and apply what you've learned between every
lesson, otherwise you'll be spending more than you need to. And once
you can stop safely and manage bad surfaces, come out and join us on a
Sunday Stroll. The best way to get better at skating is to skate more!

== SEE YOU ON THE STREETS ==

The word this week: "Freestyle" (in exchange for every ten cones
collected. Offer limited to one per household. No cash alternative)
