== THIS WEEK ==

DID YOU REMEMBER to bring your skates to work? Is there time to go
home and get them? You surely haven't forgotten that the our friends
at the LONDONSKATE kick off tonight. 7:30 for 8 at the Bandstand on
Serpentine Road: the route goes to Camden and the pace will be
somewhere in between LFNS and Sunday Stroll pace. "The streets are
waiting", they say.

Which is good news, really: there were a couple of places on Friday it
felt like the streets had upped and left before we got there.

The second LONDON FRIDAY NIGHT SKATE in our short season of "there is
no theme" skates is not going to Camden. Just for a change. It has
some nice straight bits through Fitzrovia, a couple of mews (purrfect
for any skater), a downhill from Notting Hill, and some twisty bits
and very nice surfaces in the South Kensington second half. Half time
at Queensway, 12.5 mile total.

In the Mall on SUNDAY will be lots of tired and sweaty people who
have just made their way round parts of London. No it's NOT Bunny
Stroll 2 but the London Marathon. In order not to steal their thunder
we are going in the opposite direction, southwest through Belgravia
and Chelsea over to Battersea Park for a half time stop, and then back
again.

== LAST WEEK ==

We're taking our cue from the trendiest modern media and letting you,
our readers, write this week's LONDON FRIDAY NIGHT SKATE report. It
saves us the trouble.

"Great skate! & my first friday night finish (after a few
attempts!!)" - LouLou

"Last night was great! I really enjoyed all those hilly bits,
specially speeding down them!"

"Good skate and thanks to some freshly laid tarmac theres now an
imprint of my skates in Trafalgar Square and probably an imprint of
the Trafalgar Square road surface in my knees." - Phil

On SUNDAY 280 of us made our way north to Camden. Then we paused to
enjoy the sunshine before we headed back to Hyde Park Corner.

Congratulations to Marzena W who was one of the 280 and who completed
her very first Stroll.

== AXLES NO QUESTIONS, WE'LL TELL YOU NO LIES ==

For anyone wondering what happened to the Firebrox on Friday when it
slowed down dramatically and dropped off the back of the skate: no, it
wasn't just a tired bike rider, it was one of the back brakes which
had decided to clamp itself onto the disc. A bit of a drag, you might
say. We've got some new bits for it and we're investigating (it looks
like the axle is bent, which probably doesn't help) - hopefully it
should be back on the road soon.

== DESPERATELY SEEKING NICHOLAS ==

We're still trying to track down Nicholas, who won a Proline
skates voucher in our EasterSkate raffle, which was held after the
Bunny Stroll. Winning ticket is orange number 95, we have part of your
phone number, contact us and quote the rest and we can give you your
prize.

== CAT AND RAT GAMES ==

Some of us who weren't out on the Stroll were doing another skate
elsewhere in London: the FISS track race organised by the
LondonSkaters Speed Team at Tatem Park. Gorgeous weather encouraged a
large number of competitors and spectators, and the LSST folk put in a
pretty good showing, with medals for marshals Hans (2nd in Category
1), Fred (2nd in Cat 2) and Dan (3rd in Cat 2)

Track race days are free for spectators and cost around a tenner to
participate in if you're a FISS member. There are also races for
non-members - "RAT" races (which are cheaper but shorter) are open to
anyone with skates and a helmet. Check the events list on the LSST web
site for future races.

== A BIG BIRD WRITES ==

It's tough being a big bird but I'm not chicken. I can come out now
and tell it how it was. My hours of hell! The heat, the exhaustion,
the silly comments about my tights. I've got Max Clifford's number and
he says it's Big Bucks for Big Bird. I'm selling my story, but not for
chickenfeed.

Which is why Week on Wheels can't afford it. Now cluck off!

== THE SARDINIAN DRINKING CLUB==

A few weeks ago, you may have noticed that several familiar faces on
the skate were conspicuous by their absence. They had all abandoned
London for the joys of Sardinia, where thirty of our very own Lycra
fans had joined seventy German speed skaters to get drunk for a week.

Unfortunately, they had to do some skating too.

Each day saw them practicing their drills in the morning and then
taking off for a road skate in the afternoon. The more enthusiastic of
the group kept going even through the snow and hail that Sardinia
threw at them. (Back in London, we were just enjoying Spring. Serves
them right for skipping marshal duty!)

The week finished with a 60km road trip, allowing the skaters to show
off their newfound skills and perfectly honed bodies. Did you notice
the difference when they got back? Is a certain well-known bunny's
backside still the best looking bum in London? Or is Marty now a
serious challenger for the title?

It wasn't all hard work, though. Much drinking was done and the meals
(the week is fully catered) were often the high point of the day. You
don't have to be a Lycra clad freak to take part - you don't even need
to wear speed skates - and anyone who finishes the Sunday skates would
get a lot from it.

Check the long range weather forecasts and, if there's no mention of
snow, book up for next year!

== COMING UP ==

May 4th - CIRCLE LINE SKATE, to celebrate the 6th birthday of the
LFNS. 18 miles, travelling the route anticlockwise, the skate will
have 3 sections with 2 breaks. Wear yellow!

June 2nd - BIRTHDAY STROLL - join us to celebrate the Sunday Stroll's
5th birthday. Wear birthday suits! No, wait, that joke's been done.
The birthday suits are for the Naked Bike Ride, not the Stroll.
