== THIS WEEK: BARNESTORMING ==

THIS WEEK: We're out to leafy South London for a skate amongst the
fields, and on some surprisingly great roads. Half time is just past
Putney Bridge, which in keeping with last weeks skate, is actually
just over 1/3 of the way round. If you're leaving us there, nearest
tubes are back across the bridge at Putney Bridge, or East Putney then
we speed up and re-cross the river on Hammersmith Bridge (look out for
the road barrier) for some nice sprints around Olympia and Kensington.

You may be thinking, two Barnes Routes in 1 week? The LondonSkate are
also venturing into this area of London (see below) but are doing it
the other way round and spending less time down there. The reason for
the clash of routes (we usually try to coordinate routes to avoid
this) is that the street lighting down in the country is not great and
thus we avoid the area until the mid summer. Sunset this Friday is
due after 9:15 - so, make the most of the lighter evenings while they
last.

SUNDAY we're just as much in the dark about as you are, and the route
check is going to be a solo effort by Christian. This probably has a
LOT to do with him breaking years of tradition and doing the route
check at an ungodly hour of the morning on Saturday: in the meantime
all we can tell you is that we're going "somewhere central".

The route will be up as soon as possible, but possibly only after we've
wielded some big sticks.

== LAST WEEK ==

Peter C was our Lead Marshal last FRIDAY and proved that, despite time
off playing on speed skates, he still knows his way around London. We
headed north, looking for new tarmac in the general direction of Lords,
and we found a lot of it - though some might say a depressing amount
seemed to be sloping upwards. An earlyish break at St John's Wood left
us with one more hill to climb and then our reward was a series of long
fast drops back to Hyde Park Corner and (thanks to a sneaky short-cut)
just time for a few quick drinks before staggering home.

We had a few first-timers out with us but special mention goes to Scott.
He's seven years old and has never done a street skate before but he
finished this one with a big grin and more energy than his parents had by
then. Congratulations, Scott!

On last week's SUNDAY STROLL, lead marshal Kensey led over 275 of
you (a record for a normal Sunday stroll this year) took us on a relaxed
tour of Mayfair and Covent Garden, and planned to do the Embankment
before half time, but a roadblock held us off. We passed some high
visibility tourist spots, so having so many people out in the sunshine
made it a bit special (and we've got the photos to prove it!)

== PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT ==

The last couple of weeks we've seen skaters cut across corners on the
pavement, even when pedestrians have been standing there waiting to
cross the road. People who have the courtesy to wait for us to pass
are likely to be unamused to find themselves essentially standing in
the skate.

It isn't big and it isn't clever. Please don't skate on pavements,
especially at junctions, so please keep left whenever you stop at
junctions, as we don't like skating on the pavement either.

== SOUNDS PAINFUL ==

Boom-tish Boom-tish Boom-tish Boom-snap DOH!!

As many of you know the sound bike broke on Friday - the Lead Marshal
blamed the bike designer for not fixing a bit that was on the way out, and
the designer blamed the Lead Marshal for picking a route with too many
speed bumps. This carried on till someone realised they were both the
same person, he had the decency to look sheepish and has promised
to try and get it back on the road for Friday.

== LONDON TO BRIGHTON ==

You'd be forgiven for thinking "what does a Charity Bike ride to
Brighton have to do with the skating community?" Simple.. About 20
intrepid skaters will this year be taking part - unofficially - from
Clapham to Brighton

This is considered suitable for advanced skaters only and judging from
Mike van Erp's writeup

             http://www.serpentineroad.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=25428

you can see why. Several of the skaters taking part are collecting
money for charity and donning fancy dress. If you wish to donate to
the cause(s), then read further details in this thread.

== FACEBOOK==

The global phenomonomonon that was Myspace seems to have been
overtaken by the upswing in the use of Facebook. Even this intrepid
journalist has logged in, signed up and then wondered how to hide
everything from his silver surfing parents... Nevertheless, the
London skating community is coming together slowly online, and we hope
through it it, to help draw in new people to the skating scene. So if
you haven't yet signed up, check out the London skating community at

== GOODWOOD CHARITY MARATHON ==

There are 6 weeks to go before the Goodwood Roller Marathon, but only
a couple of days left to register at the cheaper £15 rate - on Sunday
it goes up to £20. If all else fails you can register on the day, BUT
if you're able to do it earlier please do - the organisers have costs
to meet (track hire, timing equipment, numbers etc) , and if everyone
leaves it to the day of the race there may not be a race on the day.

Goodwood has traditionally been the race where London skaters get the
marathon bug: with a smooth course, picnic facilities and the chance
to skate around the historic motor circuit, we hope you'll be joining
many of the LFNS marshals who'll be doing this race on 29th July.
