== THIS WEEK ==

The LONDON FRIDAY NIGHT SKATE we're going for a romp through Belgravia
and Chelsea, with a stop on Horseferry Road for half time and a Soho
second
half. There may be cobbles ahead, but while there's moonlight and
music ...

The SUNDAY STROLL heads to Covent Garden and Coram's Fields: half time
at that shopping center thing round the back of Russell Square.

And the LONDONSKATE tonight is 'Shopper's Delight', which means Oxford
St, Regent Street and Chelsea; half time (more of a 4/5ths time) at
Parsons Green.

== LAST WEEK ==

The LONDON FRIDAY NIGHT SKATE was rained off about a third of the way
in. The SUNDAY STROLL meandered North to Maida Vale, through what has
been described as the smoothest road in London (Randolph Avenue, just
before half time). Sorry no photos: our photographer was away at the
Goodwood Marathon along with 26 of our regular marshals and first
aiders. If you took any, send them in.

We didn't have the FireBrox sound system out on Friday or Sunday
either - it's not ill, but we ran out of legs. Goodwood Marathon on
Sunday meant that the usual suspects (all keen racers) were resting or
racing.

We may get this problem again for the next few events in the oh so
cool London-in-Lycra calendar. (August 31st, September 2nd, 28th and
30th. So if you want a buzz that is very different from skating,
happy faces all around, then please come and have a try. As long as
you have an awareness of traffic around you so won't crash into
skaters, and we get to know you and trust you with our baby, then you
should be fine. If you're interested, come and say hello after the
Sunday Stroll, and bring shoes so you can have a go.

== IT'S AN ILL WIND THAT BLOWS NOBODY ANY GOODWOOD ==

"If you need to stop for any reason, stay OFF the inside of the
circuit. This is a live airport"

Over 220 skaters were present at the Goodwood Motor Circuit near
Chichester on Sunday. This is the longest-running long-distance
roller event in the UK, and probably the most inclusive. Ages ranged
from 10 to 71 this year, and participants were variously using inline
skates, "traditional" quad skates and even longboards.

The full marathon is 11 laps of the course: the tarmac is smooth and
wide, but the headwind all the way down the start/finish straight
caused more than a few recreational skaters to learn the value of
drafting.

The marathon winner was 16-year old James Ashby in 1:15, and the
determined 10-year old completed her first marathon in just under 4
hours. LFNS marshals took a clean sweep of the Ladies prizes, bagging
first through fourth places.

Congratulations to the Camberley Skaters, marathon organisers, for the
superb day out in aid of the NSPCC, for whom they hope to top last
year's effort of £2,700 raised. And for making sure the ice cream van
turned up.

And if that's whetted your appetite, next UK date is the London INline
Marathon, August 2nd.

== PROFILE VIEW: SIMON (WOTNOBRAKES) ==

This week we profile Simon R, one of the skate's designated first
aiders, who provides vital encouragement at the back of the skate as
well as patching up minor injuries and referring more serious ones to
the professionals.

Growing up in Ibiza in the 1970's, Simon worked as a DJ in one of the
most famous clubs on the island at the time and also worked as a dive
guide.

These days, Simon has a "real job" in IT, but also runs a freediving
club in South London, teaches the sport at various UK sites including
the Submarine Escape Training Tank in Gosport, and takes students
abroad for advanced freediver training. When he volunteered to help
out on the LFNS we couldn't think how to make use of his freediving
skills, but his first aid skills are much in demand. He reckons he's
done more first aid in his first 3 weeks on the skates than in a whole
year at work, where he also has that role.

Simon's been skating for 15 months and finds it a great contrast to
diving, where things tend to be (or, as he notes, "should be") slow,
relaxed and very anti-adrenalin.

Several recent LFNS and Sunday Strolls have featured a "Wotnomix".
"It's strange making up a mix in advance for something other than
dancing", he tells us. "Whereas in a club you get instant feedback if
your music's rubbish, on the skate people won't walk out on you (I
imagine) no matter how strange your taste in music." Comments on the
music are always welcome through the usual web site feedback form.
