* London Inline Marathon: last change for cheap registration
* Marshal Profile: Mike
== THIS WEEK ==
There's quite a lot packed into this week's LONDON FRIDAY NIGHT SKATE.
West End - Embankment - St Paul's - tunnels under the Barbican - large
wooden armchairs at half time in Aldgate. Through the City - over the
Thames - around, through, and under Waterloo. Westminster - Chelsea -
smooth surfaces - lovely squares - last sprint towards Hyde Park
Corner. 20 tunnels, 2 bridges and down 4 hills (though that does mean
we have to go up as well).

On this week's SUNDAY STROLL, we'll be taking a 7-mile meandering
route round Chelsea and Battersea, with half time inside the park
itself. Your lead marshal this week is Steve Cares. And he really
does.

TONIGHT'S LONDONSKATE takes us for an outing in the country, to leafy
Barnes. This is one of the few routes that can only be skated in
summer as some of the roads are unlit so we have to hotfoot it there
before dusk. Meet by the bandstand on Serpentine road at 7:30pm for an
9pm departure. Sunset tonight is at 20:37.

== LAST WEEK ==
On FRIDAY Markus pulled a route out of his hat at short notice,
leading us around the smooth streets of Belgravia, Chelsea and
Soho. Just when we thought he was losing his touch, he gave us a free
ankle massage on the cobbles in Covent Garden.
N.B.: IT'S A STREET SKATE. In the first half of the skate the marshals
were approached by a well-dressed young man who politely explained he
had just been run into by a skater going backwards on the pavement. In
this case the pedestrian was willing to look past the immediate
situation and see the overall picture - a group of people out for a
fast funky Friday night on wheels. But we know that not everyone we
meet may react so thoughtfully, and a complaint from an injured
pedestrian is asking to have the whole thing shut down. So please -
STAY OFF THE PAVEMENT WHEN YOU SKATE!
The SUNDAY STROLL went on and on and on - at least, it looked like
that when watching it go past. With a newly-fixed music bike and just
under 270 skaters, we headed back to Covent Garden and Coram's Fields
to the sound of 60's music. Many thanks to 'Tish who volunteered to
ride the FireBrox, we hope you'll ride for us again soon.
== NOT QUITE NEXT WEEK ==
On 26th August, we'll be running another of our one-way destination
Sunday Strolls, ending in leafy Kew. It'll be around 12 miles, with
stops at Parsons Green and Chiswick. Bring shoes.
== IN A FEW WEEKS ==
Gremlins got into last week's mention of the LONDON INLINE MARATHON
when someone fed Dan after midnight. It takes place on 2nd SEPTEMBER
*not* 2nd August. Which means you haven't missed it, and there's even
still time to register before the price goes up on Friday.
Organisers are pleased to announce that there will after all be a free
t-shirt with every entry, thanks to sponsorship from
londonskaters.com. The good news for marshals of the London street
skates (LFNS, LondonSkate, Sunday Stroll) is that there's also a 10%
discount if you register before Friday. Pay in the normal way and then
contact an LSST bod to claim your cash back.

== ONE PUFF OF SMOKE AND HE'S GONE ==
Mike has been skating since before it was cool and is hence one of the
longest serving marshals, having started at the wee age of 16. (This
was before the skate had Organisation and Rules and being 16 wasn't
seen as a problem.) He used to be around a lot but then - Hey Presto!
he vanished. Perhaps it was something to do with his joining the Magic
Circle but more likely it was just the need to keep the girlfriend
happy. However, he does turn up whenever he gets the chance and then
you'll see him racing ahead of the pack while complaining that he's so
out of practice he can't keep up any more. It's said that many of the
other marshals find him intensely irritating though we maintain he has
a certain puppyish charm (or so the girlfriend says).
Mike is one of our qualified First Aiders and trains with the
Territorial Army where he is a budding bomb technician. This means
that if you have the odd bump or bruise, you should get it checked out
by Mags or Tammy but if you are shot in the chest you should hang on
for Mike.
Mike will soon be spending his term times away from London but he
expects to be around often enough to annoy us. He will be back in town
fairly regularly, working the odd magic gig amongst other things. (It
says here on this flyer that somehow seems to have dropped from his
pocket that he is available for private and corporate functions and
can offer discounted "skate-rates".)
Mike's career plans involve the Army and his ambition is to stay
alive. So that would mean keeping on the left, then, would it Mike?
== ENDING ON A BUM NOTE ==
If you like your toilet humour, we think you'll love this narrative
from a cyclist prescribed an industrial-strength laxative by his local
hospital. Thanks to LondonSkaters Mike for the link.
