"In Heaven an angel is nobody in particular"
   -- George Bernard Shaw

On Earth it's still a great big hill, though. The LONDON FRIDAY NIGHT
SKATE heads towards Clerkenwell and Islington, although as a gesture
to skaters (and Firebrox riders) who found Primrose Hill tough going
last week we won't be doing the whole climb. Half time is just off
the City Road, and the second half should include a few fast bits
(Embankment, Whitehall, Millbank). Or else. LM by Dan, Music by
Marty, skates model's own.

In a departure from our last 2 Eastbound 1-way SUNDAY STROLLS, we now
change direction and head West on a 12-mile route along the Thames
(and the very skate-able Thames Path) to finish in leafy Kew, close to
the train station. We make two rest stops, the first at Parsons Green
and the second at Chiswick Village. Please BRING SHOES to get home in,
as this is a 1-way skate and we will be staying in Kew and NOT
returning to Hyde Park.

Tonight's LONDONSKATE is 'Bridge the Town', a lovely route crossing
four bridges and following the whole length of the Embankment from
Tower Bridge to Parliament. Meet by the bandstand on Serpentine Road
at 7:30pm, they leave at 8pm.

== LAST WEEK ==

WOW! No, not Week on Wheels but the general response to Markus's LFNS
round town. It was a classic Markus route - but with only one really
nasty section of cobbles. Fast bits, hilly bits, spectacular downhills
and, yes, probably the most evil high speed dash onto cobbles followed
by a right angle turn through a narrow gate. And yet the most serious
accident the First-Aiders had to deal with was a cramped leg. Everyone
must have been practising or something.

- 'Was it slow tonight?' -- Debbie, LFNS virgin

No, Debbie, it wasn't. I hope we don't bore you this week.

Our SUNDAY STROLL expedition to find the Northwest Passage was
defeated by pack ice, starvation, scurvy and lead poisoning. Or,
depending on who you believe, by the weather forecast. We'll try it
again later in the year.

== FIAT LUX ==

It's getting dark out there again: sunset is 8:10pm and it's dark by
9. This means that it's time for our annual reminder to WEAR LIGHTS.
The front and the back of the skate are comprehensively lit up, but
for only a small investment in clip-on cycle lights or those dangly
things you can significantly reduce the chance of car drivers pulling
out from driveways or car parks into your path. Also helps for skating
home or to the pub or the tube station after we've returned to Hyde
Park. Expect to pay about a tenner.

(Note that we ask you not to wear hi-vis on the skate because of the
potential for confusion with the marshals. Some people are easily
confused)

== PRRRRUP! AI! AI! CARNIVAL ==

Start your anti-rain dances for this Sunday, because it's Notting Hill
Carnival weekend. A group of skaters led by Skatefresh's Asha Kirby
will be gliding around the empty streets of the pre-carnival route,
from 11am - 1pm this Sunday. It should be a delight to skate, 80% of
the route is super smooth and there is no speed limit! The dress code
is both 'Carnival' and 'colourful'. There's still time after the skate
to make it to the park for our one-way Sunday Stroll to Kew, or stay
on and boogie on your skates when the party gets going. Rumour is
that there may be a Firebrox too.

Just turn up at 11am at the corner of Westbourne Grove and Chepstow
Road (Monsoon shop on the corner, nearest tube Bayswater). Or see the
map below.

== AND LASTLY ==

We'd like to answer one of the questions we get asked most often here
at Week on Wheels Central (apart from "what day is the LFNS"):

"How can I join the elite group of philanthropists who get name
checked in skating newsletters?"

Easy. You give marshal Bren 26p, as did one of those who wanted to
express his undying gratitude after Friday's skate. And if you give US
your name, Mr A Non E-mouse, we'll mention it right here.

(and the other: "Friday")
