WEDNESDAY: LONDONSKATE

Route: Tonight, our friends at the LondonSkate are running the "Vice
City" route: a tour of Victoria and Embankment with half time at
Liverpool Street. This is the penultimate Wednesday night skate (their
marshals hibernate during the winter), so make sure you don't miss it
as in a couple of weeks there won’t be a skate.

FRIDAY: Having hung out by the river last weekend for the Thames
Festival, we're taking a 13 mile trip through Mayfair, Soho and
Islington before arriving at the half time spot at the new Arsenal
footie ground (nearest tube Holloway Road or Arsenal). There's a huge
smooth open space for half time fun, and an interesting run back via a
pretty little bridge over one of London's historic canals.

SUNDAY: It's another surprise route this Sunday. Given that much of
Central London will be reserved for cycles and skates (see below),
expect to stay within the confines of the West End.

AND MORE SUNDAY: This Sunday is the Hovis London Freewheel - also
known as The Day of the Bicyclus Maximus Londinium. Cars, trucks (but
most importantly taxis) will be banned from some streets in Central
London allowing cyclists free reign. For those of us that get around
on eight wheels and not two, the rumour is that the organisers seem
quite happy to have us along. If you are lucky you might even get to
see a familiar music bike around (both our FireBrox and the
LondonSkate's Bass Freight should be out to play).

== LAST WEEK ==

FRIDAY: Markus led the LFNS on a skate down the North Face of Ladbroke
Grove. Miraculously, most of the skate survived the first half even
though the skate veered precipitously close to the Victoria skater's
pub. It was in the second half that Markus was in full form: the skate
sped down The North Face(TM) of Ladbroke Grove; climbed up the lumpy
path through Holland Park; and finally cruised along Kensington High
Street all the way back home. A totally feature packed skate.

SUNDAY: Roger led his first SUNDAY STROLL through Mayfair, Soho and
Fitzrovia arriving at the half time spot, a lovely little park called
Judd Street Open Space. On the second half we cruised through Seven
Dials in Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square. The weather decided to
smile on Roger with sunshine all the way (we've lots of smiley faces
on the photos to prove it).

AND SUNDAY EVENING: At the Thames Festival Night Carnival, inliners
fought quaddies with light sabres then joined in the Magic Slide and
other dance moves to a disco-inspired theme. Lidwina, the patron saint
of skating complete with halo constructed from broken CD’s bopped
beneath a mirrorball suspended from the FireBrox. A 12-metre
illuminated sea serpent, controlled by 6 skaters deftly weaved around
chains of people skating backwards, and marauding vikings aiming to
bring it to a slithering halt (the sea serpent won).

Photos from skate photographer BigSteev document a flavour of the
night’s antics.

== LIFE IN THE FAST LANE ==

"Keep left" - "Keep left" - "Marshals passing through"

Native English speakers (and anyone else who got reasonably far with
the Linguaphone course) should be fairly clear on the concept by now:
the skate stays left of the white line allowing the marshals a
comfortable gap to proceed up the middle of the road without having to
play chicken with oncoming buses. But regular LFNS skaters will also
know the temptation of slipping out sideways to pass slower skaters or
get to the front. So here's our exclusive Week on Wheels guide to not
getting caught:

1) look behind you, and don't pull out in front of anyone. If you are
lucky you will force them to shed speed, they will hate you, and you
may find yourself being used as a brake. If you are less lucky you
will force them to shed a lot of speed rapidly, and you may find
yourself being used as a shock absorber, a cushion, or a toboggan.

2) it is not enough to be going faster than the person in front: the
marshals are most probably going faster yet. Some of them go Very
Fast(TM). If you are not keeping up you may be assisted - forwards or
sideways.

3) plan ahead and identify where you will rejoin the skate. If you
don't, and have to continue down the right hand side until you've
overtaken the lead marshal, nobody will be very amused.

4) marshals won't protect you while you're pretending to be one, so
you need to be aware of your surroundings. Including but not limited
to: oncoming vehicles turning right, traffic islands, police
motorbikes, potholes, stationary marshals giving directions, and
pedestrians. In a collision you'll get 0 (zero) sympathy points for
claiming that you didn't see them or that they shouldn't have been there.

In summary: you skate at your own risk; skating in the marshal lane
will tend to increase it.
