== THIS WEEK ==
EDD says he thinks he's found the smoothest stretch of tarmac in
London, so the FRIDAY NIGHT SKATE is going to investigate. The only
problem is it's way out west, so we're heading into the sunset, through
Shepherd's Bush and beyond to half time at Turnham Green. After that
the smooth bit, then back to the start via the famous Kensington
Church St.
He goes on to say "The route is completely swapping around, red will
become black and black red in different parts", but that may have been
a note to the marshals. If not, bring paint.
SUNDAY marks Alan's second attempt at the Northwest Passage: a gentle
wander round the north-west edges of Hyde Park, via Mayfair and
Paddington to Bayswater, then back almost the same way. Ideal for
first timers: huskies and sleds not required.
== LAST WEEK ==
FRIDAY saw us taking a square route around London going up and down
and round and round. No music bike – but Lead Marshal Sol arranged for
us to be serenaded by Andean musicians (and dancers) en route. A warm
evening brought thousands of drinkers onto the streets which made for
some interesting skating as we passed some of the hundreds of pubs
that lined the route.
The continuing absence of the music bike (the part's in the post -
somewhere) has led to desperate measures by some of our SUNDAY
STROLLERS who have organised a Skaters' Chorus to cheer us on our way.
Traumatised by the din, we made a more-than-usually-leisurely tour of
South West London with half time at Parsons Green.
The warm weather meant more new skaters than usual for October.
Congratulations to all who finished.
== OBESITY "AS BAD AS CLIMATE RISK" ==
The public health threat posed by obesity in the UK is a "potential
crisis on the scale of climate change", Alan Johnson warned this
weekend. Another factoid with which to beat your non-skating friends
and colleagues - if you have any left - into taking up the sport:
skating is, as we all know, a low-impact aerobic activity that can
burn up to 700 Kcals per hour. That's provided the skate isn't rained
off, of course: perhaps the unpredictable warm wet weather expected as
a result of global warming is the more pressing concern after all.

Especially if you go to the pub instead.

== LIFE'S A BEACH ==
In LOS ANGELES you can skate along the sea front from the far end of
Santa Monica all the way to the far end of Venice Beach (8.5 miles).
Most of the way the path is smooth concrete and it winds its way on
the beach itself - but take take care, as sand sometimes gets blown
onto the path and can prove slippery. Since this is California, there
will be girls in bikinis and guys in swimming trunks. Whilst trying
not to get distracted you may be able to impress them with your
superior technique learned back in London.
It wouldn't be the US without an opportunity to spend money, of
course. If you left your skates at home or just need bits and bobs,
our reporter recoomends the skate shop at the beginning of the strip
along Venice Beach. The staff are helpful and friendly.
== AND THEN YOU DIE ==
Or at least, reach the end of this Week on Wheels. Report from our
man on the street is that road surfacing vehicles and loads of cones
have been sighted nesting on part of South Carriage Drive. He doesn't
say if this is a good thing or a bad thing. Meanwhile: comments to
the usal place - don't email us, it bounces - use the unsubscribe link
