== THIS WEEK ==

“Four thousand people cross London bridge every day, mostly fools”

(Thomas Carlyle) - skaters excluded, of course, which is a good job as
Markus will be taking us on a popular route, wending its way through
Piccadily, Tottenham Court road to Holborn (yes that up hill) before we do
a lovely downhill section to Waterloo and along to half time at London
Bridge. The Faster second half will see us foolishly crossing London
bridge
before our fast run back to the park via Bank, the Barbican, Coram's
Fields and Bond Street. Be ready to make lots of noise!

This SUNDAY, Christian will be taking us on a 2 hour long special warm up
skate, in preparation for the Halloween skate. Thanks to our techie guru's
our lead marshals now have the ability to put their routes live on the
website each week without geek intervention. This should prevent
recurrences of the issues we had last week with missing route data. So
if you see no route for the skate from now on, you know who to blame.

== LAST WEEK ==

FRIDAY, we went way out west in search of smooth tarmac. Everything
was going smoothly until we had to reroute before half time due to
roadworks and we discovered the roughest surface in London Sad With
the detours behind us we went in search of the smooth black stuff, and it
was good, so good we did the stretch twice before some fast long sprints
down the urban pathways of Chiswick and Kensington. All that was left
was a long climb up to church street before plunging down the hill and
sprinting back to Hyde Park Corner.

SUNDAY, thanks to the late Autumn sunshine, we had another large group
of happy skaters turn out. We found one annoying traffic jam and
quite a few smooth surfaces on our way to and from Bayswater. It seems
not all Smart cars are driven by intelligent drivers these days, as
Snakeboard Mike found when one drove over his foot. Thankfully, we're
pleased to report there was no damage to him and only minor tweaks
needed to his famous snakeboard.. It's just a shame we didn't get the
number of the car.

== SKATING ON HOLIDAY WITH YOGI BEAR ==

If beach, sun and sand are not your thing and you are more into granite
cliffs, majestic vistas and forested mountain tops, you might want to head
out to The Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park California. There is
a really nice network of bicycle tracks. On the whole they have good
tarmac and are perfectly skatable. The terrain is relatively flat although
there are some nice gentle inclines (and declines).

For the daredevils there is a short steep incline heading to Mirror Lake
(or, since it is totally dry this time of year, Catbox Pond). It is a pain
going up but you can really bomb it going down. Just please lookout for
kids on bicycles.

And when in the evening, you are sitting round the fire and someone asks
whether you were the guy "Rollerblading" round The Valley, have a heart
and try not to point out that Rollerblades (TM) are actually a brand name.

== FIREBRAKES ==

On his way out of the house this morning, your correspondent found a
small padded envelope from JD Cycles containing two pistons and seven
seals. This may presage the apocalypse (note that anyone blowing one
trumpet, let alone seven trumpets, on the skate is liable to find their
personal world ending right there and then) or just the end of
music-free skates. With luck and a following wind, the Halloween Skate
may yet be accompanied by a thing that goes Thump in the night.

== DONT STRAY OFF THE ROAD, ITS GONNA BE SCARY OUT THERE ==

This years Halloween Skate is THIS Sunday, after the regular Sunday
Stroll. So dress up to skate’n’scare, starting at 5pm from near the usual
stroll start point. The route has now been confirmed and can be seen on
the official website – halloweenskate.com – just click on the
rollerskull at
the top, or there is a bigger route map hidden but click the link below to
see. The route is 10miles, with half time at Covent Garden. The pace will
be slightly faster than a stroll, but with the route focused on the
centre of
town there will be lots of stops in which you can show off your scary
costumes to the tourists. Quick note of warning, if you turn up at the
park
at 5 to see the stroll just arriving back you’ve forgotten to re-set your
clocks as they do funny things this weekend and give us all a lovely hour
extra in bed.
