==THIS WEEK==

FRIDAY – PUTNEY & BEYOND

After her gentle Stroll round the Park last Sunday (see below), Lead
Marshal Sol will be stretching her legs with a trip to Putney on
Friday. Half time is at East Putney and then back South of the river
to Battersea. Highlights is the Sutherland Grove downhill to
Southfields (unless, of course, you think Sol’s skates are one long
highlight).

SUNDAY - SOMEONE WILL BE GOING SOMEWHERE

OK so last week we had a good excuse for not having details of the
Sunday Stroll and this week we have no excuse at all. But it will be
happening - honest. [Ed: Stroll is weather dependent. Check our Web
page.] Assemble at 2.00 at the Hyde Park Corner end of Serpentine Road
and see who turns up.

==LAST WEEK==

WEDNESDAY - EVERY CLOUD HAS A SPOOKY LINING

Last week started with a BONUS SKATE. Thanks to the rain stopping the
scheduled Halloween skate, a bit of last-minute re-scheduling saw the
ghosties an ghoulies out on the day (or night) itself. Obviously WoW
has more readers than we thought, as an early edition telling people
of an extra skate had a respectable crowd assembling in the park. (OK,
lots of people read about it elsewhere, too.)

The usual over-stated, under-dressed suspects were all there. There
seemed rather a lot of black cats this year (and rather a lot of black
PVC) but the number of wicked witches made the inclusion of 'Ding Dong
the Wicked Witch is Dead' on the Halloween mix in distinctly bad taste.

Saffy once again took on the role of Ludwina, patron saint of skaters,
making an unmissable back marshal. The serpent was also back on duty,
eyes glowing an appropriately evil red.

The Halloween skate is always a special event and having it on the
(f)right night meant sharing the streets with various other fancy
dressed lunatics, who seemed to enjoy the spectacle. Next year,
Halloween falls on a Friday. Put it in your diaries now.

FRIDAY – CLAPPED OUT IN CLAPHAM

Last week Roger took the Friday Night Skate on a new route to Clapham.
“A spot of magic near Clapham Junction meant we didn’t need to skate
up any hills before reaching the glorious downhill that carried us all
the way back to the park,” said Roggie afterwards. He lives in a world
of his own but he’s happy so we leave him there. Many skaters said
they enjoyed the route, which also bypassed Lavendar Hill and the
infamous Kim's Graveyard. Unfortunately the skate arrived a little too
late to see the Clapham fireworks, but a small percentage of
Stockwell’s population shouted “sharing is caring” as they tossed a
few rockets our way, so that was probably just as nice.
Congratulations this week are headed Ahmad’s way. After skating for
only two months, Ahmad completed his first London Friday Night Skate
last week. Your promiscuous WoW correspondent caught up with Ahmad at
the Vic after the skate, where the dear chap was jubilant. “The skate
was not as tough as I’d thought it would be, and I’m chuffed I didn’t
fall at all,” said Ahmad, who coincidentally was avoiding splatters
from a more experienced skater, who for once was in too much pain to
sing. Well done Ahmad. Get well soon Rob.

SUNDAY – BRING YOUR CHILD TO WORK DAY

We tell everyone that the Sunday Stroll is child friendly and Sol
proved this by co-leading her first stroll with nine-year-old Laura.
The pace, mostly set by the co-Lead Marshal was super beginner
friendly. The really slow bits, though, were thanks to horrendous
traffic snarl-ups. Still, Laura kept us moving along the seven mile
route round Hyde Park and, thanks to her keeping her mum in line we
were home and dry by just past four.

== WHY ARE WE WAITING ==

.. For your WoW? No we didn't burn out getting WoW out to you super
early last week, yours truly has in fact been burning the midnight oil
jumping on the facebook bandwagon. The LFNS are proud to present

http://apps.facebook.com/fridaynightskate/

Share it with your friends,

==IF IT'S NOVEMBER, IT MUST BE ALMOST CHRISTMAS==

For those who just can't get enough of costumed skating, don't forget
the Santa Skate. This year's skate is on Saturday 15 December. Tickets
are Ł10 and include your very own Santa costume to keep. To get a
ticket, keep your eyes open for Santa's helpers who will be selling
them before during and after skates from now till December.

The skate is organised by LondonSkaters, who run the Wednesday skates,
but this year they are sharing the proceeds with the LFNS marshals. At
the moment the LFNS don't get any money from appeals on the Web
(whatever people email you to say) so this is one of the few
opportunities you have to help pay for the running of the skates and
have an amazingly good time as well.

==OUR FASHION CORRSPONDENT WRITES==

Shades of grey, tan and red seem to be the colours of choice in this
years Autumn collection. No were not talking about the latest
offerings from Prada or, for the more seasoned skater, Primark
(innit), but City of Westminster's new designer offerings for road
junctions. These new light gravel surfaces are designed to mark
pedestrian crossings and improve stopping distances. Well, in
practice, our man on the street informs us that they don’t and can in
fact greatly increase the distance you can powerslide. Looks good though.

==THE END BIT==

A pretty girl at a party told me this was her favourite bit. She loves
its witty insouciant air. So no pressure then.

This week's end bit has no wit whatsoever. I blame the pretty girl at
the party.
