FRIDAY – PUTNEY & BEYOND (AGAIN)

If at first you don't succeed, try and try again. Those are the words
of an old skating motto. And true to the words of Mr. Seed, Mistress
Sol will be leading the skate on her most wondrous of routes to places
so remote they have yet to be named. Or at least named properly, as
surely Southfields is more a description than a name.
Ok, so on the question of names, you decide. All we can say is
it's a magical route that is simply full of long smooth downhills that
are also amazingly hazard free. Following last week's route check, where
we skate the route before hand to ensure there are no nasty surprises on
the night, marshals were heard saying they had never skated faster than
on these roads. Join us Friday if you feel like a quickie.

SUNDAY - HOTTEST SPOT NORTH OF HAVANA

This Sunday sees Lead Marshal Christian relive his Cuban holiday
with a route to make Che Guavara proud. Having been stunned to
spot a streetskate in Havana last week (in the Vedado suburb if you're
ever there) he's kindly stepped in at the last minute to lead this
Sunday's
skate.

We'll be stopping by as many Cuban themed locations as we can and
'havana laugh (geddit?!) as we go past the distinctly unsocialist Cuban
cigar stores in St James and then past Floridita in Wardour Street (a
"replica" of Hemingway's favourite Havana tourist haunt) and Asia de
(guess where, yep Cuba) in St Martins Lane. Half time in Covent Garden
and then the return leg past the Cuban Embassy in Holborn (quickest visa
ever by the way) and back on a Sunday Stroll first...a tunnel under the
Savoy!

Join us afterwards for a cigar and a mojito. No promises of Cuban
weather, women or battered old classic American cars...but if the weather
holds a fun skate.

==LAST WEEK==

FRIDAY - Skates and Friday were like two ships that passed in the night -
and a very windy and rainy night at that. After a long sunny day, rain
clouds over West London decided enough was enough and loosed their
load. Unfortunately, there was just the right amount of water on just the
wrong set of roads, so Sol's superb route to the wild west was canceled at
the last minute. Fortunately many a skater made it to the Vic and
discovered that every cloud indeed has a silver lining. Two hours less
skating meant two hours more boozing, and a fab night was had by all.

SUNDAY - Well it was certainly a tough call, made even tougher by the
drizzle that started just as we left the park, but in the end, the drizzle
faded as quickly as it started and our Sunday Stroll to St Pancras
went off without a hitch. After fixing many problems with her brakes,
Firebrox also made a welcome return to her role of head of
"boombastic" entertainment.

Highlights of the route included the excellent curry restaurants of
Drummond Street, which we passed just before reaching our half time
spot at the British Library. After paying a few fines for overdue books
about skating, our banging band of book worms formed a filling for
Sandwich Street, and gave a friendly wave to our old friends at the
Brunswick Shopping Centre before heading back to the park for a likkle
more Shaggy, courtesy of the 'Brox. "If me a the rice well you a the
peas," said Brox later.

== WHEN THE BATTLE'S LOST, AND WON ==

Well, we still think that a skating event billed as Battle UK should be a
tourney of the chivalric arts. Hawking we do already (see the end of any
race), jousting should adapt easily to being performed on wheels, and as
for fencing: we reckon hockey players should rush to a sport that actually
gives them points for hitting the other player instead of making them
pretend they were aiming for the ball.

But apparently not. "BattleUK II: Attack of the Cones" was a freestyle
skating event featuring speed slalom, freejump, 'battle rules' style
slalom, a slide competition and a freestyle dance-off. Following on from
the success of last year's event, this year was again capably organised
by the NottinghamSkaters Freestyle Club, and you can find results on
their web site.

"Yes sir, sorry Sir, Won't happen again sir!"

== SPAMALOT ==

No not Monty Python, despite the Editor's recent perusal of their very
entertaining Autobiographies, but a quick thank you to those who sent us
feedback regarding the hotmail Spam filtering problem we had recently. So
far so good, it looks like the fixes our techie team put in place 2 weeks
ago have resulted in no more hotmail delivery problems.
