==THIS WEEK==

Markus will be leading us northwards on FRIDAY with a trip to Chalk
Farm (half time), where many a skater will probably visit the
excellent ice cream shop. We return to Hyde Park via the west side of
Regent's Park with a final sprint the full length of Park Lane. It's a
while since we've been that way and we're confident that Markus has
found some of the 'interesting' surfaces that he is famous for. His
skates are always that little bit different so don't let his
reputation put you off. And remember: the skate leaves at 8.00. Be
there or be running to catch up.

SUNDAY sees us heading eastwards to Her Majesty's Royal Palace and
Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and sometime home to the Royal
Observatory. Yes, it's time to take the skate to the Tower. Half time
is at Tower Hill, for ice cream (we hope) and the Ceremony of the
Allen Keys (we expect).

The Tower's first prisoner is said to be Ranulf Flambard in 1100,
Bishop of Durham. He escaped from the White Tower by climbing down a
rope which had been smuggled into his cell in a wine casket - security
procedures for prison visitors those days presumably being more lax
than they are today.

==LAST WEEK==

'Apprentice' fans will have enjoyed the trip to Hackney Town Hall,
although old man Sugar was nowhere about. People who don't watch 'The
Apprentice' (are there any?) will have no idea what I'm talking about.

Roger led FRIDAY's low-calorie, Sugar-free skate to the far
north-east, accompanied by a music bike that pumped out old favourites
until suffering a main-frame failure on the return leg. The bike was
stripped down and finished its journey on the bus, unlike the rest of
us who made it back to Hyde Park Corner on our skates.

Around 30 photographs made it onto our website by Saturday afternoon.

SUNDAY saw over 200 skaters join us for the sort of afternoon that the
Sunday Stroll is all about. With brilliant blue skies and temperatures
in the mid-twenties, Lead Marshal Alan took us on a relaxed tour of
Victoria with half time at Westminster Cathedral. Marshals deployed
water pistols for the first time this year.

We took so many photographs that it took most of Monday to get them
all online. Also for the first time this year, we made a short video
which is available alongside the photographs at this address:

==COMING UP==

Sunday Strolls, like the LFNS, are generally circular – starting and
finishing at Hyde Park. In the summer, though, we like to get further
afield and once a month we take a ONE WAY STROLL to a destination
outside Zone 1. The first One Way Stroll of the year will be on Sunday
25 May when Lead Marshal Markus will be taking us East to Victoria
Park. The One Ways are a little longer than the regular strolls and
(by definition) don't come back, so plan ahead for an extended afternoon.

==HALF TIME==

Apparently, at least one skater lost the Stroll at half time because
they went in search of refreshment and didn't make it back before we
left. Half time is generally supposed to be around 10 minutes on both
Fridays and Sundays. While they have been known to run over, the half
hour that our missing skater apparently expected has never (quite)
happened. If you think you might be 15 minutes in the ice cream queue
(easy enough in this weather), check which direction the skate will be
leaving in and be prepared to sprint and catch us up.

==GLOBAL WARMING==

The sudden rise in temperature means that parts of London's roads
already resemble primeval tar pits. As those who staggered into the
stickiness outside Buckingham Palace will have learned on Sunday, the
dramatic reduction in forward motion of the skates can lead to a rapid
increase in downward motion of the skater. Watch out for the patches
that the various utilities have been dabbing all over the highway and
be ready for sudden slowness or future palaeontologists will be
digging out skater bones alongside the mammoth skeletons and then
they'll get very confused.

==SKATE PATROL==

The coming of summer means that countless small furry animals are
emerging from their long winter sleep. Keen-eyed skaters will see the
red markings of the Skate Patrol volunteers, their colourful T shirts
attracting beginner skaters to their FREE stopping lessons. The Skate
Patrol volunteers can be seen in their natural habitat along
Serpentine Road (by the boathouses) on Sunday afternoons. If you are a
nervous skater or have trouble stopping, do take advantage of their
free lessons. And if you're an experienced skater who can stop on a
dime, then consider volunteering to help them out.

==GARAGE SPACE REQUIRED==

PLease remember that we are still looking for garage space for our
music bike from the end of August. If anyone can help in any way,
please contact us using the feedback form on our web page or speak to
one of the marshals.

==THAT'S ALL FOLKS==

As our Editor wilts in the heat and his PC fans threaten to take the
machine to take-off speed, we leave you for another week. Skate safe
and remember: don't reply to this email - it will bounce. Use the
feedback form on our site instead. To unsubscribe, use the link in the
mail footer - right at the bottom after the copyright notice.
