== THIS WEEK ==
FRIDAY: Watch out for black cats, avoid mirrors and ladders and, by
all means, don't spill the salt.
Most people will probably have realised that this week's skate is on
Friday the 13th, a date commonly associated with bad luck. So, all day
long, millions of superstitious skaters across the country will hold
their breath anticipating misfortune, or, even worse, rain. Others
will avoid leaving the house altogether, refusing to drive, shop or
work on the ill-fated day.
But whether you're a true paraskevidekatriaphobe (a person with an
irrational fear of Friday the 13th) or just mildly suspicious: Touch
wood, cross your fingers, and pop that lucky rabbit's foot in your
pocket - and there will be an almost five-to-one chance that it won't
rain at all that evening!
This week the LONDON FRIDAY NIGHT SKATE is going to Southwark. We will
leave at 8pm sharp, and half time will be at Joan St, near Southwark
Station. The route is 12.1 miles long.

The SUNDAY STROLL this week is going to Coram's Fields. Heading out
via Sloane St, we pass through Victoria, past Parliament to Whitehall
and Leicester Square, then through Covent Garden up to Coram's Fields
and past Russell Square for half time (tube: Picadilly Line). We
return through Bloomsbury and Fitzrovia and down Regent's Street
before going round Berkeley Square and finishing with a skate down
Park Lane.

== LAST WEEK ==
Last Friday Markus led a small but perfectly formed group of skaters
around what we lovingly refer to as the last third of the Circle Line
Skate. The number of skaters was quite low because there was more than
a small amount of rain at around 6pm, but besides being an expert
skater, Markus knows a thing or two about weather forecasting, and his
prediction that the rain would go away in time for the LONDON FRIDAY
NIGHT SKATE proved accurate. Top marks for those that turned up on the
night, they were rewarded by an unusually fast skate. A video is
online now...

Sunday turned out to be one of the sunniest days of the year so far,
and several hundred skaters joined lead marshal Steve for a SUNDAY
STROLL to Battersea Park. Fun was had by all, and we took over 400
photos, so if you click the link below you are more likely than ever
before to see pictures of yourself and your skating buddies.

== SKATED NAKE ==
The WORLD NAKED BIKE AND SKATE RIDE will return to London on Saturday
14th June. The route is posted online, and includes a few cobbles in
Covent Garden. However, the Naked Skate, as we prefer to call it,
travels relatively slowly, getting through 6 miles of central London
in about two hours.
The organisers welcome all proficient skaters to the event, which they
describe as "a protest against oil dependency and car culture, which
has grown every year since 2004". Somewhat reassuringly, they add that
it is fully sanctioned by the police and that no participants have
been arrested since the event started.
Over 1,000 people are expected to join in, and there is no need to be
completely naked - the organisers say you can go "as bare as you
dare". We hope to see you there.

== HI FIIIIVE ==
This week our sincerest congratulations go out to Rob, who completed
his first LFNS last week, and also to Paul, who finished his
second. Well done guys, especially for turning out on such a dark
evening and staying the course despite the aforementioned moisture. We
hope to see you every Friday for evermore!
== THE DUKE OF BOOTS ==
If last weekend seemed just a little more peaceful than normal,
perhaps part of the reason was the ever jolly Yoli, cone dodger
extraordinaire and no slouch on our streetskates, took a band of 33
skating friends to Vitoria to enjoy the Thursday Night Skate and a
host of other activites.
Among other things Vitoria is steeped in history as it was there in
1813 that the Duke of Wellington led a combined English, Spanish and
Portuguese army that beat Joseph-Napoléon Bonaparte, elder brother of
French Emperor Napoleon I. The result of the battle was to restore
control of Spain to the, err, Spanish. For his efforts the Duke of
Boots walked off with a bunch of nick-nacks that now furnish his old
London flat, which is only a stone's throw from our start point at
Hyde Park Corner. This was not an official skate trip, but if you ask
her nicely Yoli might just show you some of her photos.
