== THIS WEEK ==

This week the LONDON FRIDAY NIGHT SKATE is visiting a few old
friends. Our 12 mile route covers some freshly resurfaced roads near
Lambeth Palace before heading north of the river for half time with
our old pals at Hoxton Square. Still more excitement is promised for
the second half as we race down friend number 2, our old favourite
that is Pentonville Road.

Please note, the route contains some downhill sections: specifically,
Pentonville Road is a long fast downhill and there may be traffic at
the bottom. For your safety and the safety of others, you must be
able to turn and control your speed, even on hills.

SUNDAY is the SECOND STROLL to Victoria Park: we were not victorious
last week owing to weather, so we're having another go at this one-way
Stroll to East London. It's one-way, we don't come back, so bring
shoes and Oyster cards - unless you enjoy paying cash fares.

We'll be travelling at our usual relaxed Stroll pace but the route
will be a little longer than usual so we'll be finishing a bit later
and we can expect some slightly more challenging surfaces than on a
regular Stroll. Please: parts of the route are on bike paths and other
open areas, so be aware that we're sharing these with pedestrians and
cyclists - show consideration for them as you skate. Pedestrians are
not the enemy.

== LAST WEEK ==

FRIDAY's skate to Dan's house went off more or less as planned, except
that it didn't actually get that far. We had mixed feedback about the
speed - genuinely, the ten people at the front thought it was fun, but
people nearer the back found it slower. This is because it's summer,
and there are more new skaters and fair-weather skaters on the road.

Short of kicking over half the skate off and telling them to come back
next week (we may be mean, but we're not *that* stony-hearted) there
wasn't a lot we could have done to make it much faster. Comments are
welcome via the web site, but please use a valid return address. The
Lead Marshal would much rather have done the whole thing at a sub 1
hour pace, and urges you to write in support of his position.

SUNDAY's skate was, sadly, rained off. After forecasts of all-day rain
we did think for a while that it would clear up, but a three hour
skate with path and towpath sections was not really on the
cards. We're trying it again this weekend, so our apologies to the
skater who wrote in on Sunday and asked us to hold it over for two
weeks because he'd miss it. We did look at doing that, but the
timing's not really possible.

== FROM THE FIREBROX FRONT ==

After its accident on the skate two weeks ago the Firebrox was taken
to Clapham, where late last week it underwent welding for a broken
back. A spokesperson for the bike team reports that the operation was
a success and has described its condition as "stable".

The back wheels are still away being rebuilt, as one too many (more
accurately, several too many) potholes have taken their toll, but
progress is encouraging and we hope it'll be out to play again soon.

== FREE LESSONS ==

With the coming of summer (or something approximating thereto), Skate
Patrol volunteers have donned their red T shirts and taken up position
near the boathouses on Serpentine Road. They are there from 1.00pm to
5.00pm on Sundays.

Skate Patrollers don't actually patrol anything - but they do give
valuable FREE lessons to get you started and - more importantly - to
teach you how to stop. Unlike your best friend or passing strangers
anxious to start up conversation, these guys have actually been
trained how to teach. They have qualifications and everything. We do
ask that before you join our street skates you are able to manoeuvre
confidently through the crowd and - most important - stop. Sometimes
you need to be able to stop quite quickly. If you are not sure if you
are up to standard, PLEASE go and see those nice people at Skate
Patrol. They'll look at your skating and tell you if they think you
can cope with the Stroll and they'll help you get better if you can't.

If you're already a super skater and thinking about teaching,
volunteering to help Skate Patrol will start you on your way and give
you invaluable experience. Talk to them.

== MARATHON ENDEAVOURS ==

The LONDON INLINE MARATHON, 2008 edition, is confirmed for the 31st
August at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit (near Heathrow) and there are even
rumours of a new T-shirt design this year. If you want to register at
the cheap price, you have until Saturday - it goes up on the 1st June.

GOODWOOD ROLLER MARATHON - open to inline skaters, quaddies, longboard
skateboarders, and probably anyone else on small plastic wheels (if in
doubt, ask them), is the UK's race for non-racers and you'll see more
people there in jeans than in Lycra. The event's organised by
Camberley Skaters and welcomes all styles, ages and abilities of
skater – as long as you can roll competently! If the full 26 mile
marathon distance sounds daunting there are also mini (2 laps) and
midi (5 laps) length races, and if 26 miles sounds easy there is a new
mega-distance available of approximately 100km (26 laps).

The ice cream is described as "notoriously huge".
