== THIS WEEK ==
The LONDON FRIDAY NIGHT SKATE this week is billed by LM Markus as the
"Robert the Bruce" skate - it's his birthday, innit? After seeing some
of the narrow traffic-free roads he'd incorporated into it we did
suggest a new name but in the end decided that would be not so
a-mew-sing after all. The route runs around Hyde Park and Holland
Park, with half time on Queensway.

But if Friday's the Robert the Bruce skate, the SUNDAY STROLL with its
strange frisson of deja roule must surely be the Brucie Bonus. (Wasn't
it the Great Scot who said, 'If at first you don't succeed...'?)
Half time this time at Marylebone.

== LAST WEEK ==
FRIDAY found Lead Marshal Bren taking us to Barnes. 'Have we been here
before?' he asked as we pulled up for half time by the duck pond. Then
it was, 'I can't remember why I came here,' and he was off back to
Hyde Park Corner. When he got there, he looked at the throng following
behind him and asked, 'Are you my family?' We're putting him back on
medication (several pints of it a day, served chilled) and we expect
him not to take us to Barnes again until next summer.

Unfortunately, despite our best efforts swearing loudly at the weather
radar we got a SUNDAY SLUICE anyway, and so there was no
Stroll. Apologies to anyone who saw the initial "go" posted and made
plans which didn't come off, but for a while it looked as if the wet
patch would be past London before the start of the skate.
The good news is that instead our crack team of Meccano addicts
descended to the Batcave and fettled the Firebox to within an inch of
its life. It still needs some test runs (preferably when it's not so
wet out) but with luck and a following wind, on Friday this week we
may once again be able to face the music.

== OUR ARCHITECTURAL CORRESPONDENT WRITES ==
In our continuing occasional series on 'Buildings Bren has noticed
round the Park', our very own Frank Lloyd Wright discusses this year's
Serpentine Gallery Pavilion:
Anyone who has recently skated along West Carriage Drive, otherwise
known as The Ring (no idea what it's got to do with Gollum) may have
seen a couple of large cranes, which are either the stars of this
year's giant KerPlunk contest or building the 2008 Serpentine Gallery
Pavilion. Every year a trendy architect gets to showcase a design that
does for building what the Turner Prize does for art. This year's
construction is well under way and should be ready in time for the
official opening on 20th July – not that you'd know if it was finished
or not. The pavilion is designed by Frank Gehry, whose other notable
projects include the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao (curvy), the Dancing
House in Prague (twisty) and the Chiat/Day Building in LA (err ...
binoculary!).
The Serpentine Galleries website states that the new Pavilion was
inspired by the wooden catapults designed by Leonardo Da Vinci. To
test this we are asking for donations of rubber bands so we can try
and launch our critic into the Serp.

== READ ALL ABOUT IT ==
We're guessing that most of our readers aren't avid purchasers of the
'Sunday Sport'. You might want to give it a quick glance this Sunday,
though, as there is every chance that it will feature Skate Lisa who's
been posing for pics for a feature on skating.
A 'Sunday Sport' picture of a woman with all her clothes on! It's got
to have novelty value, if nothing else.
== SKATING IS COOL AGAIN SHOCK! ==
Perhaps the newspaper interest in skating is something to do with
Nokia's idea to liven up summer by taking ROLLER DISCO on an open-air
national tour this summer. It starts on the South Bank this weekend
(Friday to Sunday). At the time of writing, tickets for Friday evening
and the weekend had already all gone but there will be some available
on the day. Sessions are free but only last an hour, so you may prefer
to stick to the Beach. Here, at the West End of Serp Road, every
weekend is free outdoor roller disco. We just don't have Nokia's
advertising budget.

The bad news for bladers is that the cool kids are all in quads this
year (apparently). There do seem to have been a few more quaddies on
the street skates recently. The LFNS welcomes all skaters but do be
warned – you need to be very fit to complete the skate on
quads. Respect to those who do so every week.
== YOU READ IT HERE FIRST ==
As crazed journos scribble out random stories about skaters in a
desperate attempt to look as if they have their finger on the pulse,
remember that we poor hacks at Week on Wheels have been turning out
this sort of stuff for years. The difference is that journalists get
expense accounts and you don't have to pay for Week on Wheels. If the
absence of a price tag isn't sufficient recompense for the absence of
photos of underdressed young ladies, you can unsubscribe by using the
link in the mail footer - right at the bottom after the copyright
notice.

We do love to hear from you, so do write to us about your skating
issues and what you would like to see in Week on Wheels. But don't try
to reply to this by mail (it will bounce) - use the feedback form on
our site instead. We do read all our fan mail but reserve the right to
ignore anyone who doesn't like us. Please remember to include all your
bank account details and PIN codes with your comments.
