== THIS WEEK ==
FRIDAY is the return of the "Dan's route home from the pub" skate -
although, unlike this skate, Dan's route home from the pub doesn't
turn around in Shoreditch and go back to Hyde Park. We head east on
old favourites Lever St and Percival St, half time is at Moorgate, and
back via London Wall, St Pauls and Russell Square.
The theme for this weeks' skates is "left": if you arrive late, we
will already have left.

This week's SUNDAY STROLL is the first of 2008's ONE-WAY
STROLLS. We'll be heading East to Victoria Park and we won't be coming
back so bring Oyster cards (unless you enjoy paying cash fares) and
shoes. We'll be travelling at our usual relaxed Stroll pace but the
route will be a little longer than usual (so we'll be finishing a bit
later) and (as Markus is leading) we can expect some slightly more
challenging surfaces than on a regular Stroll.
Parts of the route will be on Bike paths and other open areas. Please
be aware that we're sharing these with pedestrians and
cyclists. Please show consideration for them as you skate.

== LAST WEEK ==
A small but enthusiastic crowd braved the threatening weather for
FRIDAY's skate. It was a repeat of the trip north round Regents Park
that was cut short by rain in January. For a while, it looked as if
history might repeat itself but in the end the rain held off (just)
and we were able to get back to HPC safe and dry.
We had two spots of excitement as we cleared the road for emergency
vehicles to get by. It was very smoothly done and the police at Hyde
Park Corner gave us a big thumbs up as they belted through the
junction faster than they would normally have been able to.
Congratulations to Augustin and Lucie for completing their first
LFNS. We had some other first timers who dropped out along the
way. Shame on those who made it nearly home and then sacrificed a
blast down the full length of Park Lane in favour of an early drink at
the Vic!
SUNDAY saw a return to the recent sunshine - just right for a trip to
the Tower, where a convenient ice cream van is always on hand for
half-time. The sunny weather seemed to bring out an unusually large
number of cars: we don't usually expect to be held up by traffic in
the City on a Sunday afternoon but this week we were. Perhaps they all
wanted to join a skate trip round town but have yet to grasp the
'skate' bit of the idea. Anyway, we bet we had more fun than them.
Congratulations to Will, who completed his first Stroll on only his
third skate outing. At this rate, we expect to see him on the LFNS in
a fortnight!
We took around 100 photos of the day, all of which can be seen on our
web site:

== FIREBROKE ==
Skaters wondering why there was no music last week may wish to know
that components of the Firebrox sound system are distributed across
Queensway, Basingstoke and Notting Hill while we have the frame welded
and the back wheels rebuilt. We think it'll be a couple of weeks, but
more news when we have any.
Thanks to the skater who approached us completely unsolicited on
Sunday and offered a donation towards the repair costs: we've
earmarked your tenner for wheely things. (You might say it's "spoke"n
for.)

== BEGINNERS FREESTYLE COURSE ==
Have you ever watched the cool people shimmying in and out of the
cones and wished you could do that? Well now you can.
The ever-wonderful Naomi is briefly in London between jetting off to
places she thinks are more interesting. She's agreed to run an
introductory course on freestyle skating at the Beach (Serpentine
Road) on Saturday 31 May. It will run from 10.00am - 1.30pm and she
promises that the hardest thing covered will be backwards criss
cross. The course will cost you £40 but there'll be a maximum of eight
people, each with their own set of cones, so you get a lot of
individual attention for your money. Naomi is a great teacher and a
slalom star, so this is a short-cut to freestyle fabulousness. To
book, email Naomi: naomi@skatefreestyle.com.
== LONDONSKATE ==
Not enough street-skating in your life? Too busy to turn out on
Fridays or Sundays? Have you considered LondonSkate?
LondonSkate run the Wednesday Night Skate. It's very similar to the
Friday skate (many of the marshals are the same people), yet strangely
different. For instance, instead of starting at the Wellington Arch,
it starts about two hundred yards away at the Serpentine Road
bandstand. But it's still at 8 o'clock and it still runs in a circle,
arriving back by 10.00.
Some people resent the suggestion that it is slower than Friday
skates. Honestly, speeds of both skates vary from week to week, so
sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. But some people feel more
comfortable on Wednesdays and if you find Friday a bit of a challenge,
Wednesdays are worth trying. Lots of people do both because there's a
great atmosphere on Wednesdays. It's just like Fridays - but that
little bit different.
It's sort of hard to explain. Why not give it a go and find out?

== RUNNING THE NUMBERS ==
In schools up and down the country it's exam season, and we've been
anonymously emailed a sample question from this years's GCSE Running a
Street Skate. See how you do.
Attempt all parts. Use both sides of the paper. Calculators and log
tables may be used. Show your working.
a) The LFNS wish to run a street skate to Tower Hill. If there are 146
roads and intersections between Hyde Park and the Tower that need
marshals to stand in front of them, and 14 marshals present, how many
times will each marshal need to catch up and overtake the skate so
they can be in front of it again for the next intersection?
b) If the skate moves at an average 8 kilometres per hour and takes 60
seconds to pass an intersection, how fast must the marshals waiting at
that intersection skate once the back of the skate has passed in order
that we do not run out of marshals at the front? Use your calculations
from part (a) to determine the average distance between intersections.
c) Explain in words whether your result in part (b) is likely to be an
over- or under-estimate, considering multilane roads at junctions,
other road users, emergency vehicles, and accidents in the skate.
d) (Extra credit) "Please help us to keep the skate moving by friendly
encouragement of all skaters to leave a clear path for the marshals".
Discuss.
== NAME CHECKS ==
We try to name check anyone completing their first stroll or LFNS but
we need you to let us know that you've done it. The best thing is to
use the feedback form on our website. That way, we don't forget you
and we spell your name right.
Belated congratulations to Andrea, whose instructor (Matt) asked us to
mention her because she did so well on her first Stroll but didn't
tell us about it. This Sunday was her second. We look forward to
seeing her on many more.
== ARE YOU STILL HERE? ==
Now the skate season is in full swing, Week on Wheels is getting
longer. Stop reading now and get out on your skates!
