== THIS WEEK ==

This FRIDAY will see Lead Marshal Bren taking us Westward Ho! The
skate starts with a moderate blue and the second half is a stiffish
black but there's a beginners' green at half time. Yes, folks, we're
going to Turnham Green and back. Start time is at 8.00. See you then.

The green theme continues on SUNDAY when Lead Marshal Dan returns from
injury to take us to Walham Green. Usual place (Serpentine Road);
usual time (2.00pm)

== LAST WEEK==

The weather gods relented on FRIDAY and the rain held off. The
threatening clouds discouraged a lot of people so it was a relatively
small skate - but this meant fewer stops and more fun for those who
turned out. Except for a couple of junctions being dug up for
resurfacing, the route was suspiciously smooth for one set by Lead
Marshal Markus. He more than made up for it, though, by defying logic
and producing a run that ran uphill much of the way without ever
apparently heading downwards. Perhaps we could run it the other way
round one week.

Congratulations to our German visitors who popped over to London for a
long weekend and brought their skates because they thought that the
LFNS would give them a chance to see the sights. They definitely
finished the skate. Whether they have more than a blurred impression
of Big Ben to remember of the sights is a different question.

As on Friday, the weather before the SUNDAY STROLL did not look
promising. But there's a theme developing here, o ye of little faith,
for Markus did call 'Go' and verily the sun did shine and we all had a
fabulous afternoon. Even the music bike perked up and joined us in the
sunshine after sulking at home on Friday with technical problems. Also
joining us was Barbara, who completed her first ever Stroll under the
watchful eye of instructor, Asha. If you are not sure if you can make
it on a street skate, lessons are a good idea. Remember, we ask that
you can stop, even on a gradient. Barbara, of course,
can. Congratulations to her and anyone else who was new to the Stroll.

== WEDNESDAY - LONDONSKATE IS BACK==

Defying the unseasonable weather, LondonSkate started their new season
last Wednesday with a triumphant trip to Camden.

This week is the "Shopper's Delight" - a tour of Oxford Street and the
Kings Road, and their web site already says it's a "Go".

Be warned. LondonSkate leave at 8.00 PROMPT. Be there or skate
alone. (We at the LFNS are watching this experiment with interest. Do
let us know what you think about it as we may be following their lead
in the next few weeks.)

== SPEED SKATING SEASON STARTS ==

Those that weren't skating around Waterloo on Sunday were skating
around the race track at Tatem Park (it's in Enfield) with the
LondonSkaters Speed Team. The first UK race of the outdoor season, it
saw a large number of competitors and spectators, and LFNS marshals
acquitted themselves with no small amount of glory - medals for Peter
C (3rd, Cat 2) and Ed! (3rd in the Cat 3/4 mixed race), and a win in
the "RAT" race for Orsi. Complete results will be on the LSST forum
just as soon as they've been checked.

Club race events are free for spectators and cost around a tenner if
you're skating in the Category races (FISS registration
required). There are also races for the rest of us - "RAT" races
(which are cheaper but shorter) are open to anyone with skates and a
helmet, and you can enter on the day. The next track race is 4th May
in Birmingham, and the circus returns to London on 22nd June.

== BIRTHS & MARRIAGES==

No planned weddings this week (marshals must have other things to do
now the weather has finally improved) but Marshal Steve is happy to
announce that his wife, Bridie, is expecting their first child this
summer. Start knitting very small inlines now.
